14. Widgets.


Social Networking Widgets

In computing a web widget  or sometimes called a gadget is a small computer program designed to run on a web page. This small piece of programming code calls up another program from another site which as we will see is then executed within the web page by a user.

Other pages in this topic show examples of widgets. Common ones include daily weather, news, clocks and travel information. click on the link below to see examples.

Widget Examples

This exercise falls into two parts.

  1. Getting the code for the widget.
  2. Placing the code on the web page.



1. Getting a Widget

  1. Open index.htm by double clicking on the title in the file tree. - This is the page where we are going to place your widget.
  2. Watch the Choosing a Widget movie.
  3. Follow the steps shown in the movie to copy the code of your selected widget.
  4. Watch the next movie to see how to place your widget on your page.







2. Positioning Your Widget

  1. With your index.htm page open.
  2. Watch the Positioning the Widget movie.
  3. Follow the steps to create a layer.
  4. Switch to code view and paste in the widget code.
  5. Switch back to design view and press F12 to see the widget in action.







What you have to do!

  1. Choose a widget from the list of examples.
  2. Copy the code, and
  3. Paste the widget code into a layer on page.
  4. Tick off your Progress Grids.


Mark off Task 14 your progress grids.


What you should now be able to do!
