1. Setting Up a Website

In the following steps show you how to download, unzip and save the files used in the following exercises. We will also setup a site definition that links your copy of Dreamweaver with the files you are using in your website.

You have to create a site definition for every website you create.

 

Step 1: Getting the Files

For the following practice exercises many of the files have been created for you. In your own websites you will need to create or source your files yourself.

  1. Create in your Documents folder, a new folder called 'Websites'. This is where you will store all the files related to your websites
  2. Watch the Getting Files movie to see how to download and unzip your files.
  3. Click the button below to get your files. Make sure you place your files in the right place.

 

 

 

 

Starting Dreamweaver

  1. Click on Start button.
  2. Choose All Programs
  3. Place your cursor (arrow) over the MACROMEDIA folder
  4. Slide to the right, and down. Click on Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 Icon

In the Workspace Setup dialogue box, click on Designer and then OK.

If you get asked to register anything, choose Register Later. If required, your teacher will provide you with a license number

 

Step 2: Creating a Site Definition

A site defintion links the Dreamweaver program (web authoring package) you are going to make your website to the files you are going to use.

This is very very important. You have to create a site definition for each website and for each different machine you use. So make sure you don't move.

Making a Site Definition

  1. Watch the movie and follow the steps and carefully link the files in your network folder to your copy of Dreamweaver.

 

 

 

 

 

What you have to do!

  1. Create a Website folder in your network folder to store your website.
  2. Watch Getting theFiles movie: download the zip folder. Unzip it and place the files in your website folder,
  3. Start Macromedia Dreamweaver
  4. Watch the Creating a Site Definition movie and create a link between your Dreamweaver program and your website files.
  5. Tick off your Progress Grids

 

Mark off Task 1 your progress grids.

 

What you should now be able to do!
